Where is your nose?

While walking our Westie every morning, she has a mission. She is looking for cats, squirrels, and other animals she can either bark at or befriend. She particularly likes the friend part. Last week, we met a labradoodle puppy, and she had so much fun playing chase.

Here kitty, kitty.
Here kitty, kitty.

But, back to my story. If I whisper “kitty cat” it’s not simply her ears that perk; her whole body is on high alert. Because seeing a cat, and getting to pretend chase it while she is on a leash, is a highlight. She even likes to see them in windows. If I say I saw one and she can’t find it, she is disappointed.

This morning on our walk, I noticed two cats sitting beside the road. She had her nose to the edge of the road where another dog had been. I said, “There’s a cat.” But either because I didn’t do the typical whisper or she had her nose to a pile of ^&*( she didn’t hear me. She missed them.

Needless to say, I spent the remainder of our walk time thinking about the lesson Pearl just shared. How many times do we keep our nose to a pile of ^&** when God has something wonderful to share with us? Are we so worried about the yuck around us or the bad things that happen that we can’t hear God’s whisper to look elsewhere?

If so, how do we fix that? Your guess is most likely as good as mine because I would imagine it would be different for each person. I would think though that it would have to begin with a decision to adjust focus somehow.
